One of the practical questions anyone weighs up before settling in a country town is simple: what happens if someone gets sick, needs a dentist, or has to see a doctor on short notice? Kyneton Health, at 7–25 Caroline Chisholm Drive, is the town’s public hospital. It has served the district since 1854, moving from its original bluestone building on Simpson Street to the current purpose-built hospital in 2003. Since November 2019, Kyneton Health has operated as a campus of Central Highlands Rural Health (CHRH), formed when Kyneton District Health voluntarily amalgamated with Hepburn Health Service. CHRH also runs Daylesford, Trentham, Creswick and Clunes Health, but each campus — including Kyneton — keeps its own name and local services.
Kyneton Health includes a 27-bed overnight acute ward, two operating theatres, dialysis and oncology services, a palliative care suite, and outreach services such as district nursing, palliative care, hospital-in-the-home and post-acute care for people across Kyneton, Woodend, Newham, Lancefield, Romsey, Metcalfe and Gisborne. Acute ward visiting hours are 10am–8pm.
The most important service for day-to-day emergencies is the Urgent Care Centre, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for non-life-threatening injuries and illness. No appointment is needed — present at the nurses’ station, or after hours use the security buzzer to the left of the main hospital entrance. Local GPs are on call to support the Urgent Care Centre with phone consultations or visits.

GP Clinics and Family Medicine #
Kyneton has several general practices, so most residents can find and keep a regular family doctor without leaving town.
Campaspe Family Practice, right next to the hospital at 7–25 Caroline Chisholm Drive, has provided care in the Macedon Ranges since 2001. It’s a large, RACGP-accredited training practice that also hosts GP registrars, runs same-day urgent appointments (call (03) 5422 2877), and is open long hours — Monday to Thursday 8am–7pm, Friday 8am–6pm, and Saturday 9am–3pm.
Kyneton Medical Centre, at 9 Market Street, is a longer-established practice with around seven doctors and four nurses, plus visiting allied health professionals. Phone (03) 5422 1397. It’s open Monday 9am–8pm and Tuesday to Friday 9am–6pm.
Goonawarra Medical Centre, also in central Kyneton, is a newer practice offering general family medicine, aged care, chronic disease management, immunisations and skin checks, open Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. It also serves people travelling in from Malmsbury, Trentham, Woodend and surrounding areas.
Springs Medical operates a Kyneton branch on Piper Street as well.

Allied Health and Mental Health Support #
Allied health is well represented in Kyneton, much of it available either through the GP clinics or as standalone practices.

For people wanting to stay at home longer, Kyneton Health’s outreach programs — district nursing, palliative care, hospital-in-the-home and post-acute care — support residents across the district rather than only inside the hospital itself.
When You Need More Than Kyneton Can Offer #
Kyneton’s Urgent Care Centre handles a wide range of injuries and illness, but it isn’t a full hospital emergency department, and Kyneton Health doesn’t have a maternity ward. For care that needs a full ED, specialist units, or birthing services, the nearest options are:
- Bendigo Health, about 55km north via the Calder Freeway or the Bendigo train line, has a 24/7 Emergency Department (03 5454 6000) and a full Women’s and Children’s Centre, including the Birthing Suite and Women’s Ward, for pregnancy, labour and postnatal care.
- Melbourne hospitals are reachable via the Calder Freeway or a direct train from Kyneton station for specialist care not available in Bendigo.
For anyone planning a birth or expecting to need specialist or emergency hospital care, it’s worth discussing transfer arrangements with a GP or midwife early, given the distance involved from Kyneton itself.
Getting the Right Care in Kyneton #
